Western Sydney University Officers Visit CFLC

Professor Yi-Chen Lan, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) at Western Sydney University (WSU), and Professor Peter Hutchings, Dean of the School of Humanities and Communication Arts at WSU, visited CFLC on October 8. The visitors met with Prof. Li Meihua, Dean of CFLC, and Prof. Xin Zhiying, Vice-Chair of the Department of English Language and Literature at CFLC.

 

During the meeting, CFLC Vice-Dean Prof. Li Meihua made a presentation on CFLC’s programs of studies and talent nurturing models, highlighting the College’s long history and fruitful results in Chinese-English translation and interpreting research. She expressed her hopes for broader cooperation with Western Sydney University in translation and interpreting research and faculty and student exchange.

 

Prof. Yi-Chen Lan stated that he concurred with Prof. Li’s vision for broader cooperation between the two universities. He also said that he was confident that the cooperation would continue to yield significant results.

 

Following the meeting, Professors Yi-Chen Lan and Peter Hutchings met with a group of CFLC students with aspirations for further education abroad. The two professors made vivid presentations on their university’s history, programs of studies and research achievements. They also answered questions from the students.

 

After his presentation, Prof. Peter Hutchings gave a lecture on how to interpret and study literary works within the particular historic context in the case of research on Emma by Jane Austin. He stressed the importance of background knowledge for the study of literature and for translation. His observations and insights inspired the students.

 

Western Sydney University is an Australian multi-campus university. It is currently ranked in the top 400 in the world in the 2014 QS World University Rankings and 19th in Australia in 2015. The University is renowned for its translation and interpreting programs accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) in Australia.
